If, like a growing number of parents, you would like to celebrate the birth of your child but have decided against a christening, naming ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular.

A naming ceremony is an informal occasion, gathering friends and family together to celebrate the birth and naming of your child.

A naming ceremony is secular (non-religious) and as with weddings, we can design a special ceremony to welcome your child or children.  It's entirely up to you as to how you would like the ceremony to be organised but they usually last about 20 minutes.

We would be happy to help you to prepare the ceremony and lead it on the day.  During the ceremony you, as parents, state your love and commitment to your child and declare hopes for their future.

You may choose to read poetry or a favourite piece of prose, with music playing in the background.

Rather than godparents, whose traditional role is to help guide the child in a Christian life, "supporting adults" or "mentors" (who may be friends or family) just need to say that they will be there for your child as he or she grows up and throughout their life in whatever way is needed.

Naming ceremonies are not legally binding and do not have any legal status, although you may be presented with a record of the ceremony as a token of the day.

When organising a naming day at home, there are a few things you will need to consider. For instance, the number of guests you would like and how to cater for them - nibbles and sandwiches or a sit-down meal.

If you are considering 'supporting adults' instead of godparents, it would be lovely to say a few words at the ceremony as to why you have chosen them and what role you hope they will play in your child's life.

It's also nice to explain why you have chosen your child's name and what it means to you.
